Yates opens playoffs with 141-34 win over Columbia

The Yates boys basketball team opened the postseason the only way it knew how – emphatically.

The Lions defeated Columbia in a 141-34 win on Monday in the Class 4A Region III bi-district playoffs.

The 107-point victory marks the 13th time the Lions have hit the 100-point mark this season. The 141 points is a season high by ten points.

The numbers aren’t a shock for those who know Yates basketball.

Head coach Greg Wise and the Lions’ press is synonymous with the program – to the chagrin of some but delight to others.

Yates’ famed 2009-2010 season included a 170-35 win over Lee (now named Wisdom), which broke the state’s single-game scoring record.

The win launched Yates onto numerous national media outlets and into many debates over sportsmanship that year.

None of that detracts from Yates’ blueblood status in Houston. The program won four state titles from 2009-2014 and are on a 13th consecutive playoff appearance. The Lions made the regional finals last year.
